Enhancing the resilience of existing coastal communities
The City of Miami Beach wanted to enhance the Palm Island and Hibiscus Island neighborhoods. These improvements would include infrastructure renewal, enhanced drainage and stormwater quality treatment, beautification, and combating the effects of sea level rise. The City engaged us as the design criteria professional and resident project representative for this design-build project.
We provided designs for watermain and water service replacement, rehabilitation of the existing gravity sanitary sewer line and manholes, and complete stormwater infrastructure improvements. The updated stormwater system has both primary and secondary gravity collection systems as well as large pump stations to discharge overflow into Biscayne Bay. Roadway reconstruction included raising roads where possible and harmonization to properties, concrete work, the undergrounding of overhead utilities, and landscaping.
During construction, environmental controls and all maintenance of traffic had to be carefully monitored at all times. We worked closely with City workers and homeowners to reduce the impact of disruptions on residents and successfully complete the project.
Today, the island neighborhoods stand more resilient against king tide and rainfall driven flooding through both seen and unseen improvements.
