A ten-year plan of action to reduce the transport carbon footprint in response to the climate change emergency

The University of Glasgow recognises the world is facing a climate emergency and urgent action is needed. The University has put together its own strategy, Glasgow Green, which commits to a significant plan of action to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. Transport, particularly staff and student commuting and business travel, forms a key part of the strategy—the challenge is to know what measures to take to ensure targets are met.

Stantec was appointed to advise the University on what transport and travel actions were needed to achieve their ambitions. Our team undertook extensive research, including a review of the national, regional, and local policy context. We also completed a review of pre-Covid business travel patterns, a staff and student travel assessment for the commute to the University, a review of likely wider future trends in travel, and a review of the University’s transport and travel targets.

By bringing all the findings together, it was possible to conduct detailed scenario testing to identify what transport carbon reductions the University could achieve and how. As a result, the client is now able to plan how they can meet their carbon reduction targets by implementing change in active travel, public transport, business and inter campus travel, information and awareness raising, public realm accessibility and mobility, fleet vehicles, servicing, deliveries, and car parking.
