Setting a new national standard for office building design in Barbados
If a baobab tree stands tall and strong, it’s because it does not stand alone. The tree’s multiple trunks lend it strength, as well as a striking profile. In 2008, the Government of Barbados desired to raise the bar for office buildings on the island. It wanted a building like a baobab—one that stood out and stood together. To realize this ambitious vision with creativity and discipline, it brought on our Company as part of an experienced design team.
Collaborating with partners in construction, public consultation, and interior design, our team of structural specialists provided structural designs that would offer 120,000 square feet of Class A office space to the businesses of Bridgetown. The inherent nature of the site’s limestone bedrock made designing one of the islands’ few tall buildings a challenge. But our Barbadian engineering team—veterans of foundation design in the local bedrock—drew on their experience to test design principles and plan a building that was up to the test.
It was a series of unusual steps that wound up with some very familiar outcomes: a striking new building and another client satisfied by our buildings expertise in Barbados. And keeping with our longstanding promise of quality assurance, our structural engineers in Calgary, Alberta provided design input and peer reviews to ensure an optimal outcome.
