Stadium with modern amenities designed to support five high schools inspires pride in students and the community

W.W. Thorne Stadium Replacement

Nimitz High Schools since 1965. However, the facility was closed for two years after an assessment revealed structural, plumbing, and accessibility issues.

Aldine Independent School District (Aldine ISD) decided to pursue an update to the stadium that did more than just address these issues. They wanted the venue to truly showcase and support the district schools well into the future and reached out to our team to help.

We set out to create a design that embraced the community’s enthusiasm for the local sporting experience with a space that caters to athletes and supports additional school and local community functions. The facility will support a variety of student athletic programs, including football and soccer, as well as marching bands, cheer squads, dance teams, and ROTC (reserve officers’ training corps) programs from all five schools.

Adopting a collegiate vibe, the stadium features lights that can be customized to each team’s colors. New amenities include concessions, guest services, merchandising stands, and district offices, all of which offer full accessibility. The banquet space can now hold over 400 people, while renovated locker rooms and district offices provide a renewed area for players and employees. The scoreboard features advanced video technology, which students in career and technical education programs operate during games.

Aldine ISD’s renewed W.W. Thorne Stadium now provides dynamic facilities that foster a sense of pride for students, the community, and 10,000 spectators on game day and beyond.
