Bringing a modern recreational space to life

The new Athletic Complex for Caledonia Community Schools was awarded as part of the district’s 2020 Bond Program for capital improvements. The local YMCA and Caledonia Community Schools have agreed to a partnership for the operation of the Caledonia Athletic Complex as a community recreation center with Caledonia Community Schools operating their Community Resource Center and hosting competitive swimming and diving team activities at the facility.

Situated adjacent to the existing Caledonia educational campus, the Caledonia Athletic Complex program includes a new recreational center with basketball court, indoor walking track, cardio, weights, and strength fitness floor, a new competition pool, separate leisure pool and spa, diverse spaces zoned by age group, flexible meeting rooms, and offices for staff. The design takes its form from the refraction that occurs when light strikes water. Featuring a cantilevered translucent form over the main entry, this “prism” element will showcase the recreation activities occurring inside while offering an inspiring, daylit environment for the users. The building features captured views from the second level multi-purpose room and walking track to the tree grove at the north property line and out to the future playfields at the south. The translucent walls of the “prism” will illuminate from the inside during the evening, serving as a beacon to the community and a landmark for the Caledonia community.

The new Athletic Complex will bring a variety of recreational space types to the district and community that didn’t exist before.
