Eastern Ave. and Kenilworth Ave. NE Interchange and Bridge
The northeast interchange on Eastern Avenue and Kenilworth Avenue was notorious for its low vertical clearance. After sustaining significant damage from repeated truck collisions, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) brought us in to conduct investigations, develop alternatives, and ultimately design a replacement gateway structure on an accelerated basis.
We developed solutions that included use of accelerated bridge construction (ABC), using all precast, prefabricated bridge elements and innovative maintenance of traffic and construction staging schemes to route traffic around the construction. This helped maintain the active number of lanes during construction. Using these approaches cut about nine months form the conventional construction schedule.
Stantec also assisted DDOT in obtaining a $1 million construction grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Highways for Life program by using the ABC method for reconstruction of this bridge. The actual construction cost was also $1 million less than the engineer’s estimate.
Now complete, this aesthetically pleasing entrance to and from the nation’s capital allows all traffic to enter and leave safely.
