Increasing the safety and mobility of I-70 while reducing costs, congestion, and environmental impacts
Waiting an average of 52 minutes for a disabled commercial vehicle to be towed off the I-70 Mountain Corridor was creating mobility and safety issues. So we introduced a program that cut that response time in half.
With the goal of increasing safety and mobility – while reducing costs, congestion, and environmental impacts – we developed a set of traffic management programs to better manage heavy truck operations during the snow season. An integral component is the quick clearance program, which uses strategically located heavy wreckers to quickly and safely move disabled commercial vehicles off I-70. The program works in partnership with CDOT, State Patrol troopers, and local emergency managers by communicating via radio and cell phone to rapidly relocate the vehicles out of the way of traffic.
We managed the entire program, conducted stakeholder meetings, and created requests for proposals for towing and chain assistance vendors. The quick clearance program works in concert with the Stantec-managed chain assistance program, which provides snow tire chain help for truckers, and a light-duty courtesy patrol that moves smaller disabled vehicles out of active lanes.
