Pedestrians became the focus after expanding capacity at the Mariposa Land Port of Entry

With the completed expansion of the Mariposa Land Port of Entry, commercial vehicle traffic has increased to handle 1.5 million vehicles per year. But what about pedestrian use?

At approximately 175,000 crossing per year, pedestrians were now put into the hazardous position of navigating across several lanes of commercial truck and automobile traffic before reaching a designated pick-up/drop-off location north of the port.

Working with the stakeholders from the Port of Entry expansion project, we provided several design alternatives for conveying pedestrians north of the port. The option for a pedestrian undercrossing became the most practical, albeit challenging, solution.

By separating the southern entrance into first phase and the northern entrance as a second phase, we avoided interrupting commercial traffic throughout construction. The design also included 10-foot-wide by 8-foot-long precast box culvert sections for the undercrossing itself. Security doors were installed so that nighttime access was prohibited and each entrance had line-of-sight visibility for port staff to monitor activity. As a result of this award-winning project, pedestrians can now cross the port and be off to their final destination safely.
