Helping Phoenix complete its starter system and providing service to thousands of travelers
With population increasing by nearly 47 percent each decade, investing in and enhancing the transportation infrastructure in the Phoenix area has become a necessity. Creating the initial Central Phoenix/East Valley Light Rail, a 20 mile starter system, was a giant first step taken by the city and Valley Metro Rail to meet the commuting needs of the people. The Phoenix Light Rail Transit (LRT) links major business and commerce areas including Arizona State University, the largest university in the country.
We provided the civil design for Line Section 3, widely considered to be the most complex of the five sections that were part of the 20 mile starter system. Running through the core of downtown Phoenix, this eight mile section of double track was faced with numerous unique design challenges. Working with stakeholders was crucial to making the project a success. In order to maintain access to residences and businesses, we positioned the single track guideway asymmetrically, creating a local access road on one side and general purpose roadway on the other. Since its opening in December 2008, the Phoenix LRT system has exceeded ridership expectations, experiencing continued growth with over 45,000 riders per day.
