Innovative native landscaping and stormwater management
When the American Transmission Company (ATC) was ready to build their new corporate campus, they wanted to be seen as a leader in sustainability initiatives—they looked to our team for help.
Our primary goal for this project was to build growing support for the benefits of sustainable landscape design. Our team led the design, implementation, and management that incorporated native plants within ornamental areas of the site, near building entrances, and along parking and walkways. Further from the built-out areas, the new native landscaping is more naturalized and incorporates pedestrian trails, benches, and educational signage throughout the prairie. Bio-infiltration was designed along parking stalls and in open spaces to receive stormwater from overland flow and from impervious surfaces.
Despite the compact clay soil at the site, there has been a very successful establishment of the native plant communities following our work. This was achieved primarily through proper site design and plant selection as well as long-term invasive species and site management. With the project now complete, the new ATC office building received a LEED gold certification as well as a Wildlife Habitat Council award for innovative stormwater improvements.
