Helping to meet a growing community’s needs while preserving a historic and culturally sensitive area
Roads take you places and can take you through time. The Rangiriri section of the Waikato Expressway takes drivers through an important historical and culturally sensitive area for Waikato-Tainui. Our project, located near the Rangiriri Paa site, scene of the 1863 Battle of Rangiriri, is a major redevelopment of five kilometres of expressway.
To meet the community’s needs, major safety improvements and realignment were required. Our detailed design study recommended two grade-separated interchanges over the expressway and a large multiple arch culvert over the battle trench remnants. We also studied intersection geometrics, concluding that a signal-controlled interchange and two roundabouts would enhance safety and traffic flow. And we designed new stormwater infrastructure, fill slope design, pavement, and surfacing.
Wetland development, iwi consultation, and urban design were key considerations in this project. The symbolic reinterpretation of the historic Rangiriri Paa site was included in the design. A part of the 102-kilometre expressway connecting Auckland to Waikato, the Rangiriri section is an improved road that moves people, goods and services safely, efficiently, and respectfully from place to place and through time.
