Supporting safe and reliable aircraft operations on major arteries during construction
As part of Vancouver International Airport’s (YVR’s) ongoing commitment to safety and to keeping passengers, planes, and cargo moving efficiently, YVR undertook a series of rehabilitation projects on South Airfield, beginning in the spring of 2023. The scale of these projects required regular South Runway and taxiway closures through the fall, resulting in expanded use of the North Runway for landings, take-offs, and night operations. YVR engaged our team to conduct detail engineering design for this project.
We developed an optimized design with a comprehensive phasing strategy and collaborated closely with the construction management contractor to deliver the work safely and efficiently. Overall, our designed focused on meeting the needs of the airport, its operations, and commitment to minimizing impacts on the community during this limited timeframe.
Our scope of work included concrete panel replacements, a full-length overlay of Taxiway Lima, rehabilitation and upgrades at several intersections, electrical work to improve energy efficiency, and modernization of several elements of YVR’s taxiway system including some over 50 years old.
The project is on track to be completed by late fall of 2023.
