Wabush Airport Apron Expansion and Parallel Taxiway

As a vital part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s transportation network, it is imperative that Wabush Airport’s infrastructure be safe, secure, and capable of accommodating the demands of air carriers and general aviation operators. When it became clear in 2012 that the airport’s existing infrastructure—particularly the runway and terminal apron—could not support a significant increase in passage movements since 2002, Transport Canada came to us for help.

Guided by Transport Canada’s updated recommendations and guidelines, as well as the Obligations of Operator and Airport Operations Manual guidelines, we regraded the area to provide proper drainage, designed a spring flood control system, constructed a new parallel taxiway, and expanded the main terminal apron to accommodate the forecast peak demand of scheduled and charter flights, as well as itinerant general aviation aircraft.

Ongoing drainage issues in the spring and a shortened construction season challenged our team throughout the nearly two-year construction. Our highly skilled airport specialized team of civil, electrical, and geotechnical engineers conducted a full risk assessment of the site during the conceptual design stage and developed a plan to take care of these issues. As a result, these challenges were surmounted to complete the project on time and on budget.
