Helping make Eden’s snug harbor safer
The Port of Eden is an active working port that supports a variety of recreational, commercial, and port vessel operations on the south coast of New South Wales (NSW). Significant wind and wave conditions can affect maritime safety in the port and increase the risk of damage to vessels. Waterways Construction, working with the NSW Government on the Eden Safe Harbour Project, engaged our team to prepare a tender design for a 160-metre-long (525-foot-long) fixed wave screen to protect the harbor.
The wave screen consists of steel piles supporting precast concrete panels. We undertook all wave modeling to determine the design criteria and operating conditions—waves, winds, etc.—and then conducted structural assessments to provide Waterways with typical structural requirements for the screen. Our geotechnical team undertook all geotechnical modeling of the structure for piling design. We also reviewed and provided certification for the wave transmission performance of the floating wave-screen and pile support structure.
Providing a more protected harbor will enhance Eden’s reputation as a safe boating destination, which is anticipated to stimulate local investment in the maritime and tourism sectors.
