Working to preserve Falmouth's unique culture and aesthetic
When the Port Authority of Jamaica needed planning and landscape architecture services for the development of a historic 40-acre wharf district, we came in to support this extension to the Town of Falmouth, Jamaica. As the largest themed cruise port in the Caribbean, a main goal was to preserve Falmouth’s unique heritage and culture while refurbishing the existing architecture and improving infrastructure for this multi-use site.
It’s a strategic enhancement to Jamaica’s world-class cruise product. The new cruise port supports Genesis-class cruise ships—the largest ships of the Royal Caribbean fleet.
Additionally, we were hired by the National Environmental and Planning Agency to develop a mitigation plan over a five-year period to restore 54 acres of seagrasses in the area. To date, we’ve provided technical assistance and oversight for the implementation of the seagrass transplanting activities involving 6.16 acres (2.49 hectares) of turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) within the restoration’s first phase.
The port has been dubbed the “first-ever thematic cruise port destination and commercial development center,” transforming the historic Town of Falmouth into a sought after destination in a growing cruise industry.
