Renovating and repurposing an existing industrial food facility
PURIS, a plant-based food company, was looking to produce an alternative protein source. Our job? To provide multidiscipline engineering services for a food-grade facility so PURIS could process yellow peas into pea protein isolate, starch, and fiber.
We converted an existing unused site from its previous use (milk whey production) to alternative protein production, contributing services including estimating, civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, process, electrical, and sanitary piping/cleaning in place (CIP) system designs. Plus, with the re-use and modification of a used spray drier—piloting a new technology to create a rewet process for “ready to eat” (RTE) pea protein—we were able to help PURIS save on capital costs.
After the successful testing of the process? PURIS moved forward with site reuse. The protein that they’re producing will be used as an alternative protein source in health foods, alternative meats, and high protein shakes.
