From distillery waste product to a renewable energy source, spent grain finds a new life in Lynchburg
3 Rivers Energy Partners needed an independent engineer to conduct a due diligence review of their renewable fuels project at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. They reached out to our team to help.
The project creates a biogas upgrading plant and uses anaerobic digesters to process spent grain from the distillery. The digesters’ natural processes break down microorganisms in the spent grain to produce biogas and natural fertilizer to replenish the surrounding farmland. At the plant, biogas gets refined into usable pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG).
Expected to produce 900,000–1,000,000 million British thermal units (MMBTU) of energy via RNG annually, the project should reduce natural gas usage by 16 percent at the distillery after its completion in mid-2024.
