Qcells’ new facility will manufacture 3.3 gigawatts of solar ingots, wafers, cells, and finished panels annually

We’re working with Hanwha Solutions’ Qcells, one of the world’s largest and most recognized photovoltaic (PV) manufacturers, known for its high-quality solar cells and modules, to provide the design of a full-scale solar panel manufacturing facility. The enclosed facility will house the entire solar panel manufacturing process including ingot production, wafer processing, cell processing, and module production. As the largest solar investment in the history of the United States (US), the plant will include an entire wastewater facility that will process 5.5 million gallons per day for re-use into the production facilities.

We’ve teamed with Gray Construction as a design-build partner to provide architecture, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, structural, civil, water, geotech, environmental, and wastewater services. This project will be the first solar factory in the US to integrate all process steps, adding over 3.3 gigawatts (GW) capacity to the company’s operations in the US.

When complete, this will be the largest solar panel manufacturing facility in the Western Hemisphere, with all materials and production steps occurring in the US—Qcells’ new facility will manufacture 3.3 GW of solar ingots, wafers, cells, and finished panels annually.

In my mind, site development and infrastructure projects are unique because the best designs go unnoticed.

Thomas Urtz, Senior Associate, Architecture

It’s important for a designer to know and value how things are made—how feasible it is to construct something is a key part of our designs.
