Designing safe and modern transit facilities for the residents and visitors of Pennsylvania
Over the last several years, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Bureau of Public Transportation has been investing in the modernization of bus transit facilities across the state. Stantec was selected to provide architecture and engineering services on multiple key projects that will provide much needed renovation/expansion for administration, operation, maintenance, and storage activities for these authorities.
Luzerne County Transportation Authority in Wilkes-Barre, PA is consolidating the fixed route and shared ride bus operations and services onto a single property. The new location will allow for efficient and more centralized bus service to the community, safe bus circulation with no backing, and the removal of abandoned properties and revitalization of a large urban property. When complete, the new facility will be home to over 200 employees and 105 buses and provide space for administration, operations, maintenance, and storage.
With more than 100,000 square feet, the County of Lackawanna Transit System’s (COLTS) new facility in Scranton will house administration and operation areas, maintenance spaces for vehicle wash, repairs, and parts and tire storage. The maintenance area will service compressed natural gas vehicles. All COLTS buses, vans, and non-revenue vehicles will be housed inside the new facility.
To support busy operations in northeastern Pennsylvania, the new Monroe County Transit Authority facility will house administrative, operations, maintenance and storage space in Scotrun, PA. The design optimizes the current outdated facility, creates effective bus flow on-site, grows the current operation, and allows for future growth of all departments.
In Harrisburg, the Rabbit Transit Storage and Maintenance Facility will modernize the facilities for bus maintenance and store up to 120 buses. Additionally, a new transfer station will provide inter-county travelers the ability to access their workplace and services in the State Capital. The project integrates several properties on an urban block to not only provide for service growth and modernization, but also offer an improved renewal of space along a busy transit corridor.
