Transit centers can provide more than mobility, such as an anchor for mixed-use development and urban placemaking
On our winning conceptual design for the North County Transit District (NCTD) Oceanside Transit Center (OTC), in Oceanside, California, we took care to respect the existing neighborhood, while creating an inviting destination that encourages ridership and enhances the transit experience.
The OTC integrates into the urban fabric of the nearby Oceanside downtown with improved pedestrian and bicycle connections. The maximum structure height will be six stories, but will “scale-down” in height at critical areas, such as the central public event plaza, and neighboring residential developments. The transit experience will be greatly improved with a new rail station, conveniently located bus transfer areas, public ticketing area, and amenities for the rail and bus patrons.
By providing natural links into the transit center, blending structure height into the surroundings, and providing amenities for users, or those just visiting, the OTC provides the added value of urban placemaking in addition to transit as a service. As part of the ongoing project, our team is providing civil and traffic engineering services.
