Helping a critical transportation agency better understand the structural capacity of its rail system
Metro-North Railroad (MNR) brings more than 305,000 riders into and out of New York City every day, making it the second busiest commuter railroad in North America. Given the complexity of this system of 775 miles of track serving 122 stations on five different branches, maintaining structural integrity while minimizing impacts on train operations is critical.
Stantec was engaged to perform condition evaluations on all MNR’s rail bridges in New York State. This required various truck and rail mounted lifts and ladders to inspect the structures for deficiencies that would require further analysis. The inspection was completed on a variety of bridge types including arches, culverts, concrete boxes, concrete slabs, concrete-encased steel bridges, railtop bridges, and steel girder bridges. As a subconsultant to Amman & Whitney, we prepared detailed reports based on our inspections. For each bridge, we utilized field measurements and observations to analyze the primary members and determine load rating factors for a series of commuter and freight trains.
Equipped with an accurate train load capacity for the current condition of each rail bridge, MNR will be empowered to determine the most cost-effective strategy for their investment in current capital improvements.
