A fully accessible design that activates the mind, body, and spirit

Our studio recently completed Construction Drawings for the JJ Carroll redevelopment in Brighton, Massachusetts. Partnering with 2Life Communities, our client, our team developed a robust play program that will serve as a dynamic exercise and social space for seniors, their grandkids, and the local community.

Our client’s ongoing mission to provide affordable housing for low-income aging adults gave our team the drive to dig in and ask, “what is multi-generational play, and how can it serve all community members?” Through research and outreach we developed a fully accessible design that will activate the mind, body, and spirit. The playscape design was completed in a series of phases. Each phase responding to feedback from the client, their staff, and local community representatives. After several iterations we landed on a design that focuses on art, music, gardening, and meditation: some of the most popular activities within the community.

When finished, the gardens will be a fully dedicated multi-generational playground. 2Life, their community, and the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) are excited about the project and showed strong support throughout the public process, even heralding it as “a precedent for the future of senior housing design!”
