Capital Beltway HOT Lanes
After several years in development, the Virginia Department of Transportation awarded a contract for the construction and operation of High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and High-Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes in Northern Virginia. The massive design-build project added four new lanes in a 13 mile section of I-495 in Fairfax County, Virginia. The expansion project was designed to create easy and quick travel for high-occupancy vehicles, with three or more passengers, and toll customers.
Four of Stantec’s regional offices were part of the construction/operation team. We provided engineering and specialty services, including right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation coordination, and design services from our Richmond, Virginia office; supplemental survey services by our Fairfax, Virginia office; and environmental site assessments by our Baltimore and Laurel, Maryland offices. One of the challenges of projects of this magnitude is acquiring the property needed for utilities and the roadway’s expansion. Stantec’s role in right-of-way acquisition provided the affected owners and tenants with relocation assistance.
The new HOT lanes offer faster travel choices and congestion relief for motorists in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC region, which ranks highest in the nation for vehicular congestion cost. Stantec is proud to play a role in developing transportation systems that reduce travel times and vehicular emissions.
