Redesigned to allow for safe and effective training

Our team was hired by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) to provide design and construction administration services for a new 100-meter outdoor gun range at the North Deerfoot Campus.

With safety being the primary mandate, the “No Blue Sky” concept was the basis of design. The “No Blue Sky” concept relies on range rules that require the shooter not to load their weapon until they are in an approved position such that when the weapon is loaded, they cannot see blue sky. When this occurs, the bullet cannot get directly out of the range if adequate baffling material is used. We collaborated with CPS to design two shooting bays 20-meters wide, one for the tactical unit and one for the firearms unit. Cast-in place concrete walls and steel trusses were designed to support a continuous overhead baffle system designed to protect against ricochets, stray bullets from exiting the gun range, and to mitigate noise impact to the surrounding neighborhood.

The new outdoor gun range brings dynamic training spaces to the Calgary Police Service, allowing officers to respond more effectively in high-stress scenarios while adhering to strict safety requirements.
