Lancaster Castle

Lancaster Castle is a grade I listed building and includes a wide range of historic structures that date back to the twelfth century. The castle formally opened as a category C prison in 1955 but was closed in 2011. Since the closure of Her Majesty’s Prison, a range of works have been carried out to remove low-quality buildings and restore the fabric of the historic buildings.

Our goal is to provide an improved visitor experience, allowing more of the castle to be opened to the public and enabling additional groups, like educational tours for schools, to be accommodated. Our team has worked closely with heritage architects, archaeological specialists, structural engineers and conservationists to complete a program of structural repairs and restoration. We have also been involved in phase two of the works: the opening-up the courtyard area, designing a new café, and refurbishing five of the existing historic buildings.

Our support during this commission helped to maintain the historic integrity of the buildings through the application of practical, cost effective designs that were sensitive to the principles of conservation at all stages. Once complete, it will become a magnificent living monument, offering a glimpse into England’s often dark past through tours and special events enjoyed by visitors of all ages.
