Coal Orchard

Transforming a former car park and swimming pool site into a thriving commercial and residential community

Creating a catalyst for neighbouring development

An urban regeneration development, Coal Orchard set out to transform a largely unkept town centre car park into a desirable commercial and residential development and act as a catalyst for neighbouring development. Initially engaged by the District Council (Somerset West and Taunton) to support them through the detailed planning application, the contractor then brought us on their team to support them through detailed design and with issuing construction information.

We provided detailed design of the foul and surface water drainage networks, public realm works, and steps to the River Tone as well as secured S104 and S278 approvals from Wessex Water and Somerset County Council. We also incorporated surface water treatment measures to treat surface water through tree pit drainage before discharging off site, designed high quality natural stone paving for public realm areas, and completed the structural engineering design for the river steps.

Coal Orchard is well on its way to reviving the area and enhancing and benefiting the surrounding community, with the new feature steps acting as focal point for people to enjoy the riverside setting during warmer weather.
