Bears High Performance Training Centre - Engineering Services

The Bristol Bears, professional rugby club, wanted to develop a new training facility in Abbots Leigh on the edge of the city. They engaged our engineers as part of the team to bring this project to life.

Working closely with the scheme’s architects KKA and project manager Capita, our engineering team delivered mechanical and electrical designs for the facility with a focus on energy efficiency and the aesthetics of the architectural design. We also provided geo-environmental investigations, because the facility was on a former landfill site, as well as civil and structural engineering of the foundations and the steel framed barn, and acoustics advice.

With a strong emphasis placed on the sustainability of the facility, we incorporated a number of features into our designs. Controls for services are based on strategic zones and work on-demand to reduce unnecessary running costs. The pavilion building is also fit with a dedicated photovoltaic array to further reduce the consumption of electricity as part of the focus on reducing the carbon dioxide from the building and achieving a low running cost.

Officially titled the Bears High Performance Training Centre, the new facility includes an indoor training barn and a two-storey steel-framed training pavilion with a gym, changing rooms, two hybrid grass pitches (one of which is floodlit), medical facilities, and office accommodation for the club’s staff.
