University of North Dakota School of Law Addition

The University of North Dakota (UND) wanted an addition to their School of Law to serve as a unifying feature. They sought a design that would respect the character of the complex’s original building while also reducing the visual impact of a conflicting 1973 library addition. UND brought our team on for planning, programming. and design of the new addition.

Our planning and design process was a highly interactive. We employed opinion surveys, workshops, and webcast presentations to build consensus and achieve a broadly supported design solution. Through the various scheduled activities and interactions with students, faculty, and personnel, our design team identified key needs for the School of Law program.

The 15,500-square-foot (1,450-square-metre) addition complements the original building in a way that nods to the architectural context of surrounding structures. It also provided a new entry, central lobby, and commons space, as well as an advocacy training courtroom, a 50-seat case study classroom, seminar and conference rooms, and modern faculty offices with associated support spaces. In addition to these new spaces, the project also included renovation to the entire existing building to improve overall efficiency.
