All-electric facility exceeds California’s Green Building Code (CalGreen)

We designed a facility for the San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (RTA) that operates, services, and maintains their entire fleet while also serving as the agency’s headquarters. Using ultra-local building materials, our team designed the facility to exceed the base requirements of California’s Green Building Code (CalGreen). We provided architecture and civil engineering for the project—as well as survey, landscape architecture, mechanical and plumbing engineering, industrial architecture, telecom, and security design.

Sustainable building design eliminates the operational use of fossil fuels on-site and increases the potential for photovoltaic power generation with solar panels installed on the building roof and over bus parking—and the facility has been designed to accommodate a future all-electric vehicle fleet. The initial phase of battery-electric bus charging equipment for up to four buses allows the RTA to implement and test new vehicles for deployment.

The facility has parking capacity for up to 67 public transit vehicles, as well as 84 visitor and employee vehicles, and includes five repair bays, a wash bay, parts storage, training room, dispatch suite, and administration offices. Reflecting the agency’s close-knit, family atmosphere, a large, shared breakroom and kitchen opens out to an employee patio.

San Luis Obispo RTA’s new facility will help deliver safe, reliable transit services for people living throughout San Luis Obispo County.
