Addressing problems on the heavily travelled routes 590 and 104 in Rochester, New York
After decades of work for the New York State Department of Transportation, we’ve developed an in-depth knowledge of agency standards, processes, and goals. Recently, we used that expertise to address problems on the heavily travelled routes 590 and 104 in Rochester, New York.
Operating under a tight schedule, our first of four contracts involved the rehabilitation of two miles of Route 590, two miles of Route 104, and their interchange. We modelled traffic through the interchange, made geometric design changes, and added 12 new overhead signs to enhance safety.
In contracts two and three we upgraded culverts, drainage, water quality, and guide rails. The design was complicated because of heavy use and the interchange’s location on a high embankment. After a detailed investigation, we used trenchless technology, which allowed for rehabilitation with no disturbance to the roadway above.
Contract four involved the rehabilitation and preventative maintenance of nine bridges. We conducted inspections to determine the extent of deterioration and find the best solutions. Work included bridge deck repairs and rehabilitation as well as replacement or rehabilitation of abutments, piers, and bearings.
Altogether, this project improved safety for many Rochester motorists.
