Intentional design choices in this upgraded Cancer Center aim to bring comfort and a sense of community to patients and families

The Penn Medicine Cancer Center in Sewell, New Jersey includes a full outpatient oncology practice—exam and infusion suites are supported by an on-site pharmacy and blood-draw laboratory. In its previous space, the center was limited, so shifting to a larger space would allow staff to serve more patients with a higher level of care.

Our team was engaged to design the center with the challenge of fitting a large program into a limited site. Upon entering the building, visitors see a natural stone wall that we chose to mark the entry and anchor the waiting area. We focused on bringing natural daylight through the lobby into the interior by heightening ceilings at the edge of reception and part of the infusion suite. A feature curved soffit extends down the hallway to the blood-draw and infusion suites as a form of wayfinding. A pod layout within the infusion suite not only provides a sense of community and connection, but also allows for privacy when needed.

This larger, updated suite allows Penn Medicine to better serve patients while also reaching a larger population. The Cancer Center has increased its physician presence as well as its infusion capacity, and the client is excited to see the impact they are able to make on the community.
