Modern, updated facility with sustainable features

The City of Madison needed to consolidate four city operational facilities to create efficiencies and an enhanced workspace for employees. Given the critical function of this facility during emergencies and storm events, as well as the consolidation of separate facilities, building a facility to withstand disaster—natural or manmade—was important. The City reached out to our architects and sustainability professionals to help.

With the site located well outside of the100-year floodplain map, we could focus on maintaining accessibility into, out of, and through the facility in the event of a disaster. To support sustainability and energy-efficiency goals, we incorporated rooftop solar power and water heating panels, a solar heating wall for building heat, and exterior sustainable landscaping features. The facility also includes natural lighting, radiant floor heating, all-LED lighting with dimming daylight controls, and many new and innovative shop maintenance tools.

The LEED-NC Gold certified facility streamlines services and consolidates efforts and resources. Due to the efficiency of the design, the City received $200,000 from Wisconsin’s state-sponsored rebate program, the highest rebate allowed.
