Drive-through bays for long buses enhance safety on site
The City of Phoenix wanted to build a maintenance and operating facility in west Phoenix to expand service and be more efficient in operating buses in the area. Stantec provided architecture, interior design, civil, and traffic engineering services for the West Operating Facility.
One of the client’s primary desires was to have all bays in the maintenance building designed to be drive-thru bays and to have all employees in close proximity to one another, which required that the design team develop a unique design solution. The result? A four-building complex that includes a maintenance facility, administration and operations space, wash building, and fueling building. Drive-through bays allow 40- to 60-foot (approximately 12-18 metre) buses to enter and exit easily. Covered parking cools temperatures inside the vehicles during hot weather.
The West Operating Facility is the first large-scale bus operations facility anywhere in the United States designed to operate without any backing maneuvers, helping to enhance safety throughout the entire site.
