Busy Los Angeles station's new configuration emphasizes a functional, safe, and user-friendly space
As part of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) system, the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station has the fourth-highest volume of ridership and serves more than 30,000 riders each day. With the station being more than 25 years old, LA Metro saw the need to improve the station’s environment and efficiency of moving passengers—for those arriving as well as those transferring between the rail lines. That’s where we came in.
Our team facilitated multiple community outreach meetings to include the community in the station design, as this project will support some of the most underserved communities in Los Angeles.
The design improvements include a platform extension, a new track crossing connecting the two sides of the station, and improved energy efficient lighting. The station’s upgraded configuration includes new canopies and improved multi-modal circulation. The project also features a new civic plaza, mobility/bike hub, transit security and customer service center, park and ride, improved bus loading bays, and improved signage.
This modernized, user-friendly, and safe configuration improved the urban character of the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station and improved connections to local amenities such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Campus, the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, and the adjacent Kenneth Hahn Plaza Shopping Center.
