I-95 Northbound Extension - Bradshaw Road Overpass Replacement

Transportation and engineering services for a bridge replacement over a critical roadway set for expansion

This replacement bridge structure was optimized to remove unnecessary elements and reduce maintenance costs over its lifetime

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) was looking to replace the Bradshaw Road overpass in Kingsville, Maryland as the kick-off project for the northbound extension of I-95 express toll lanes (ETL). The bridge would need to be lengthened and profile raised to accommodate the future full width of I-95.

MDTA enlisted our team to provide preliminary and final design and preparation of construction plans and documents for this replacement bridge. We proposed a two-span bridge structure with steel girder superstructure to provide horizontal and vertical clearances along I-95 for the continuation of ETL. Maintaining the existing Bradshaw Road horizontal alignment, we also raised the profile to account for increased superstructure depth. The architectural treatment developed for this project served as a basis for follow on structures on the northbound extension of I-95.

Design of the bridge adhered to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) 701 Practical Design Policy which led to an optimized structure width and eliminated unnecessary elements. Semi-integral abutments and corrosion resistant reinforcing were a first for MDTA and will reduce maintenance costs over the life of the bridge.
