Designing a master-planned data center campus with a generator power capacity of 80MW

Digital Realty, a real estate investment trust that invests in carrier-neutral data centers and provides colocation and peering services, recognized an opportunity to develop a large-scale data center close to the Chicago suburban market. Through our data center development services (DCDS) offering, we were hired to evaluate the feasibility of turning an industrial park into a modern data center campus. Analysis of the site’s power capacity and structure validated its suitability.

Digital Realty then requested that we further evaluate the site based on the company’s campus criteria. We performed a feasibility study and provided multiple master plans for the site, including a new electrical substation that was retrofitted into the campus. Our partnership with Digital Realty continued as we were hired as the prime consultant for the high-tech data center campus. We led the design and construction team through the adaptive reuse of multiple building shell and core projects and the design of multiple new data center buildings.

Now complete, the campus covers 40 acres (18 hectares) with a generator power capacity of 80 megawatts. Ultimately, it will provide a secure solution for leading enterprises and service providers to unlock the full potential of their data and accelerate innovation and growth.
