Wellington City Smart Parking Data Analysis

Helping our clients understand parking duration and occupancy to inform urban planning

Using existing smart parking sensor technology to provide helpful data insights for ongoing city planning design

For the past decade, we’ve been helping Wellington City Council to understand parking behavior in its Central Business District (CBD). By conducting annual reviews of parking occupancy and duration of stay rates, we’ve provided the Council with the knowledge to help them assess the impacts of their parking provision decisions and inform future planning.

Already in use by the Council’s enforcement team, smart parking sensor technology allowed us to carry out parking analysis studies, extract and analyze data, and report on parking usage statistics for areas across the CBD—relating to average duration of stay and occupancy rates throughout the day. This process replicates the patterns a surveyor would normally follow to report results that stay consistent with historical outputs. Our data analysis approach has resulted in the automation of a large portion of the study, resulting in efficiencies and cost savings.

We are continuing to work with the Council to provide additional and updated analytics which continue to impact their urban planning decisions.
