Brookfield Zoo Chicago - Tropical Forests Exhibit

As zoo design evolves, Brookfield Zoo Chicago continues to reimagine their approach to animal care and conservation. The Zoo engaged the Goettsch Partners project team to upgrade its Tropic World exhibit, providing expanded habitat for gorillas, orangutans, and South American monkeys.

The project includes mesh canopies attached to columns that appear as trees. These keep the animals secure while creating an open, airy environment. Engaging water features, vines, and sway poles in the guise of bamboo stems enrich the space. Creating a tropical feel with greenery able to withstand Midwest weather, the design includes 75 new trees, 500 shrubs, grasses, and vines.

The biggest challenge to designing this new space was animal mobility—animals had to move freely between the facilities throughout the day. The solution? Designing aerial transfer pathways above visitors’ heads. Looking up, guests can see the animals travel through the exhibit. Additionally, the space includes a gorilla conservation center. This building is also home to the Chicago Zoological Society’s King Conservation Leadership Academy, furthering Brookfield Zoo’s mission to inspire new leaders in this crucial field.

With this new exhibit, Brookfield Chicago Zoo will expand an indoor-only space to an outdoor habitat for primates that feels as natural to the animals as possible—and offer a more authentic experience for people as well.

Goettsch Partners is the architect of record. PJA Architects + Landscape Architects was responsible for concept design development through construction documents. That work was completed in March 2023, and exhibit construction began that month. Former members of PJA joined Stantec and, in January 2024, Goettsch added Stantec to the project to provide construction administration services.
