Autonomous vehicles can solve real-world problems and build a more sustainable transportation system for the future
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is leading the way in deploying automated vehicles (AVs) in Las Vegas—and Stantec is right by their side. Their vision? Safer and more efficient travel to, from, and within the Las Vegas Medical District (LVMD). Our GoMed program design will accomplish that.
One of the first deployments in the world of AV shuttles as part of regular transit service, this GoMed program will deploy shuttles from a downtown transit hub to the LVMD, providing a stress-free and accessible mobility solution for patients, staff, and medical students. Our team is designing the operation of AVs in a fully mixed traffic environment—interfacing with traffic signals and popular travel apps—as well as designing all the transit amenities including more than 20 smart transit shelters. The new shelters will have everything from interactive kiosks to smart trash receptacles. At the heart of our design is safety, including advanced pedestrian detection to keep customers safe as they get on and off the shuttles and non-users safe as the shuttles navigate traffic.
The solutions applied to the 674-acre (273-hectare) cluster of hospitals, clinics, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine will be scalable and replicable city-wide, providing potential long-term mobility solutions for the Las Vegas Valley.
