Incorporating new utilities, a new bridge across Regent's Canal, hard and soft landscaping, and refurbishment of the canal towpath
The King’s Cross Central Redevelopment scheme is one of the largest regeneration schemes in Europe, with 67 acres of brownfield land being redeveloped. Our job? Detailed design services and reserved matters planning support through the construction phases which includes highways, transport planning, utilities, civil structures and geotechnical elements.
The £38 million Eastern Goods Yard scheme has transformed much of the historic grade II listed Granary Complex. An extensive area of public realm has been created, incorporating new utilities, a new bridge across the Regent’s Canal, and landscaping and refurbishment of the canal towpath.
Within the heart of the scheme is Granary Square, a world-class public space with a fountain comprising over 1,000 water jets. We designed the subterranean fountain plant rooms, fountain support structures, and several reinforced concrete retaining walls for this feature. This was the first phase of the project, and it required a holistic view of the interrelationships with all proposals and an understanding of wider area impacts, infrastructure requirements, highways, access, place making and public realm.
This project has revitalized King's Cross, creating a lively and diverse area for the community. The fountains are open daily and are on during daylight hours, so more time for fun during the summer months. On a sunny day the square transforms into an urban beach, with kids of all ages dashing through the fountains.
