Wellington Basin Stadium and District

Since the departure of the Expos in 2004, the desire to bring a Major League Baseball (MLB) team to Montreal has been strong. However, it would require the construction of a new stadium that would meet the needs of the sports team as well as those of the city, neighborhood, and communities that host it . The Tampa Bay Rays and the Montreal Baseball Group developed an innovative vision to make this desire a reality. They reached out to our team to help.

The new stadium facility needed to be a stone’s throw from the city’s business center and Old Montreal, and the deconstructed Wellington Basin site offered a prime location for development. Based on a detailed and realistic understanding of the site, we developed a plan that draws on the strengths and potential of the sector while limiting adverse impacts on the surrounding environment. Our design for the public realm is flexible, subtle, and supports a variety of uses—providing as engaging a space day-to-day as on game day.

A new street connecting the light rail transit (LRT) station was envisioned to be closed on game day to accommodate pedestrian traffic, while pathways along the property would align with the National Park and reinforce the regional network of bike and pedestrian movement. We also integrated the stormwater infrastructure as a public feature to support animal, plant, and bug diversity on site, along with the anticipation of a near carbon neutral facility.

When complete, the Wellington Basin Stadium and District will contribute to the transformation of this former industrial area info a vibrant neighborhood and entertainment destination.
