A climate hazard, risk, and resiliency assessment for a new healthcare facility
As part of the design of the new South Niagara Hospital (SNH), Infrastructure Ontario (IO) required the completion of a climate risk and resiliency assessment. The goal was to better understand the impacts of climate change on the proposed hospital and its ongoing operations and to undertake design modifications as needed.
Stantec was part of the existing project delivery design team for the hospital, and as a result, our climate risk and resiliency team was asked to support IO’s request. We carried out an initial assessment with regional partners to identify potential climate change related hazards from broader regional systems. Any vulnerabilities that were identified were then assessed as to whether they could result in cascading impacts on the proposed hospital. A subsequent workshop was held with the design team to identify building and site-specific impacts from the selected hazards, followed by a detailed consequence scoring exercise evaluating the severity of those impacts. This assessment work guided the design team in the development of resilient design strategies and associated climate adjusted design criteria.
The assessment process resulted in a comprehensive report documenting the adaptation actions being undertaken and integrated in the project design. The result? A design that enhances the resiliency of the SNH development now and into the future.
