Creating leading edge sporting infrastructure in the Canadian Arctic
The new Rankin Inlet Arena opened in November 2019, becoming the centerpiece for the first phase of a recreation masterplan in this remote community in arctic Canada.
The NHL sized arena has year-round ice making capability, robust and inclusive participant facilities, and spectator viewing for up to 900 people. The concessions, office, skate-sharpening, and lobby spaces are arranged tight to the dasher boards to bring everyone who enters the building directly into the visual realm of the game. Unlike typical arena design, this building is founded on a steel structure suspended on rock-socketed steel pipe piles to help mitigate climate change concerns associated with permafrost degradation. Addressing the long and short-term economic goals with stringent technical requirements, the building pairs a long-span pre-engineered building system with heat recovery on ice plant heat pumps. Our team provided full architectural, geotechnical, and engineering design services, and developed the structural designs.
With its central location and history in the territorial context of Nunavut, the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet is a central hub for hockey and ice sport, and this facility provides leading edge sporting infrastructure in line with community programming goals.
