Monitoring impacts on the environment and preserving our planet

Under its Departmental Environmental Policy, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) committed to assessing environmental impacts and to taking action. In 2008, we were named the Primary Consultant for the Standing Offer across Canada. Since then, we have carried out over 15 Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), over 20 Phase II/III ESAs, and remediation projects covering a wide range of chemical parameters and conditions.

One such project was the NRCan National Headquarters located at the Booth Street Complex, in Ottawa, Ontario, a site of known environmentally impacted soil and groundwater since the 1960s. We consolidated, and compared to current federal and provincial standards, all past reports while completing additional Phase I, II and III ESA work. A remedial action plan was developed for each of the quadrants of the site. One of the complexities of the site was the number of stakeholders and participants involved. We set standards for deliverables and were repeatedly turned to as the industry expert for consistency of the approach.
