Developing green energy infrastructure on a brownfield power-generating site has a satisfying symmetry.
The Government of Ontario had committed to phasing out all of Ontario’s coal plants in favor of cleaner sources of energy. After the Nanticoke Generating Station was decommissioned, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) won a competitive contract to build a 44-megawatt AC solar farm in two locations—a repurposed coal storage area beside the Nanticoke plant and a neighboring field of land east of the former coal yard site.
Our job was to provide civil land development across the project as well as electrical photovoltaic system design. That included AC and DC cabling, trenching, and layouts. Additional services included electrical studies, some site investigation to identify buried gas wells, and geotechnical review of rubble from the decommissioned site (for construction materials). The challenge, though, was to make sure that proper site drainage didn’t wash any residual coal dust into Lake Erie.
Now complete and in service, the Nanticoke Solar Facility is providing green energy for Ontario communities.
