With two solar arrays, one containerized battery, and a meteorological station at both buildings, students have a lot to learn
Algonquin College wanted to lower their energy expenses and test some new renewable energy sources, by constructing a solar photovoltaic rooftop array and battery energy storage system (BESS). Our job included the feasibility study and detailed design as well as the construction specifications and support.
We performed site inspections at all project stages, and before the detailed design, we performed a rooftop GPS survey for the two selected buildings. During the detailed design, our team completed a roof structural capacity assessment, a detailed layout, and a single-line diagram containing cable sizes and protection elements for each building.
The Algonquin College solar and battery system will be managed by a microgrid controller and tie into the campus building management system—together with the existing grid and backup diesel generators. The installation will allow the campus facilities group and students to learn about renewable energy technologies and microgrid capabilities. The next step? A potential 5MW expansion.
