Meadow Creek West SAGD, Environmental Impact Assessment
With a proposed production rate of 40,000 barrels per day, the Meadow Creek West project is a steam assisted gravity draining (SAGD) in situ oil sands project. It’s located south of Fort McMurray in northeast Alberta and is one of Suncor’s portfolio of emerging projects.
An environmental impact assessment was needed before this project could get started—to do this, we worked with CRE-Stantec, our partnership with Fort McMurray #468 First Nation (FMFN). Suncor recognizes the value of engaging local Indigenous communities and businesses in their projects, which provided an opportunity for CRE-Stantec and local indigenous community members to be involved in the project. Together, we worked in the field to collect the baseline terrestrial and aquatic data—in doing so, we helped build local capacity for this type of environmental work.
CRE-Stantec was Suncor’s lead consultant for the environmental impact assessment (EIA). The scope included regulatory support, collection of baseline field data, and preparation of the EIA report. The project was one of the first of its kind executed under the Alberta Energy Regulator’s new integrated development approach—this approach allows proponents to submit a single integrated application for multiple approvals and authorizations.
