A new landmark gathering place to build community and support local vendors
When the Calgary Farmers’ Market needed a second location to meet increasing demand for fresh, local foods—and serve the growing northwest corner of the city—our client, Melcor Developments, sought our design services for what will be a prominent destination in the community.
Our design for the building is based on a traditional “basilica” form and provides 5,500 square metres of space with vendor’s stalls located around the perimeter and seating and entertainment space in the middle. Vendors and visitors will enjoy a bright atmosphere with natural interior lighting from numerous windows located along the ceiling. The building envelope appears to be masonry but is a form of value-engineering with precast panels sandwiching insulation with a thin brick exterior veneer to mimic the masonry aesthetic.
Keeping the surrounding community in mind, the north face of the building has three illuminated panels designed to display murals themed to the Greenwood/Greenbriar neighbourhoods. Acting as a visual anchor, the building’s brick-clad tower draws attention from those passing by, inviting them to visit, find local foods, relax, and be entertained.
