Design and construction in a live hospital precinct—early planning is key
Designing for construction in a live hospital environment is always a challenge, and the Westmead Health Precinct in Sydney is one of the largest and busiest campuses in Australia. Our buildings engineering team provided sustainable design solutions for a new Pediatric Services Building that aligns with the latest clinical standards, while offering robust options for future expansion.
A lot of work was carried out up front to inform early construction and preparation in the live site. We prioritized energy efficiency, reliability, and value for money through a series of investigations, lifecycle assessments, climate change adaption plans, and modeling. In particular, due to the risk of contaminated air infiltrating adjacent buildings, as a result of brownfield construction, we investigated and mitigated this issue via computational fluid dynamic modeling.
From master planning through all design stages up to construction, we employed meticulous planning and communication to balance complex user group needs, clinical standards, and budget to support the reputation of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead as a world class health care provider of specialist neonatal and pediatric services.
