Celebrating themes of play, achievement, and memory
To meet the needs of 15,000 children and youth clients each year, ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development (EOK) had spread out over a patchwork of 11 leased and retrofitted office and commercial spaces.
As the hospital provides schooling, treatment and respite space for clients aged zero to 18 with emotional and physical challenges, ErinoakKids needed a home to suit modern treatment approaches. However, with locations from Orangeville to Oakville, Ontario, consolidation couldn’t come at the expense of access for clients and their families. Three sites—Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville—were chosen, designed with focus on three pillars: play, achievement, and memory.
Each of the three, two-story buildings were designed through the eyes of kids with a range of disabilities. Innovative design solutions were created by the Stantec team to support EOK's main objective—offering therapeutic spaces that are both educational and fun. Features include stair landings that were designed into a treehouse, as well as numbered stair risers, and a solar calendar on the exterior.
Today, the new EOK facilities offer an experiential design of openness, familiarity and comfort, while reinforcing community connection.
